Medical Services in Ravine Normande, Jacmel (Haiti)

The Jean-Joseph Darbouze Foundation, Inc. (JJDF) is providing basic medical services, free of charge, to the people living in Ravine Normande (Jacmel) twice weekly. Our goal is to have a medical clinic in the community where the inhabitants can receive comprehensive health care services. In addition, once yearly the foundation organizes a medical mission trip to Ravine Normande with the help of local and international volunteer physicians, dentists, nurses and support staff. Patients are screened then treated, prescribed appropriate treatment or medication, and counseled for common ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes, infections, fever, rashes, migraine, etc.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Access to health care services in Haiti, in general, is extremely difficult. In a rural area such as Ravine Normande, the situation is dire. Inhabitants seeking medical care have to travel through difficult road conditions to the nearest medical clinic or hospital. Most of the time the condition of the person(s) seeking medical care will become critical, and she/he may die on arrival. The condition of the roads that the sick have to travel to reach the nearest medical facility has a great impact on survival rate. Health care education relating to infection prevention, vaccination, sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, prenatal care, etc. is desperately needed.

How will this project solve this problem?

An effective way to address the problem is to establish a medical clinic manned with qualified medical personnel that will not only administer on a daily basis quality basic health care services that are urgently needed but also healthcare education and immunization. The medical clinic will seek to work in partnership with the local hospital and will refer to it cases that are beyond its competencies. A dependable vehicle will be secured to facilitate the transfer of patients to the local hospital.

Another aspect of this endeavor will seek to take full advantage of the expertise of the volunteer medical personnel who will accompany our team during the organization’s yearly medical mission. They will treat on the spot all cases that are within their areas of expertise and train the permanent staff on providing after care to the patients.

Long Term Impact

This project will undoubtedly save lives and improve the health of the people in the community of Ravine Normande. It will also provide a base and required know-how to assess and to address medical care needs in other remote rural areas. As the elements of healthy living are implemented and reinforced through continued education, entire communities will experience improved well-being.
